"FINISHING" THE OUTPOST

150 deck planks, five 20 ft 8x8 cedar beams, six 12 ft 8x8 cedar posts, and 45 pounds of screws later, our current project is almost complete. We drew up the designs, laid out the plans, and built one of the coolest structures in Heath Brothers history. "The Outpost" as our client calls it, took 3 weeks to construct (Timelapse Video), and just when we thought we were done, there was one final stage left that many people leave out - Finishing. Sanding, cleaning, staining and sealing the structure is one of the most important parts of building a custom deck. Without it, the lifespan of this project is cut short.

Nolan and myself took another week to really bring "The Outpost" to life. We started by using a cleaning product to remove shipping stains and other unsightly dark spots on the lumber. Remember, it is always very important to test any cleaner in a safe place before you commit to applying it to your entire project in case of unwanted results. After the cleaning, we stain-sealed the wood and then the client suggested a couple of detail finishes that we needed to create. Our client's wife asked for faux shutters and flower boxes for 3 windows. At first, I didn't think much of it, but after getting them built, installed and stained . . . it made all the difference.

It's important that whoever you hire, that you have a say and have constant input in the project. This is something you'll be living with long after the Heath Brothers are gone. It's important you stay involved in each build. The shutters and flower boxes are a perfect example of how this client put their little touch on the project, and how this little touch had a big impact on the overall look.

The project is complete and looks amazing.  The client is thrilled and the Heath Brothers are proud of the work we've done.  It always amazes me how a project evolves from the drawing board, to the structure and then takes on a life of its own . . . we leave another piece of ourselves in this one for sure.
